Embark on a 5-day journey from the cultural richness of Fes to the stunning serenity of the Sahara Desert. This trip is an invitation to explore the diverse landscapes, ancient cities, and the majestic dunes of Morocco. Each day unfolds a new chapter of adventure and discovery, here’s how you can immerse yourself in the wonders of this journey.

Day 1: Fes – The Spiritual Heart of Morocco

Your adventure begins in Fes, the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities and a world-renowned center of learning and culture. Dive into the labyrinthine streets of Fes el Bali, the old medina, where artisans craft leather, metal, and textiles as they have for centuries. Visit the Bou Inania Madrasa, a stunning example of Marinid architecture, and the Al-Qarawiyyin University, one of the world’s oldest universities. As evening falls, enjoy the tastes of Moroccan cuisine at a local riad.

Day 2: Fes to Midelt – Through the Middle Atlas

Leaving Fes, ascend into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Traverse through Ifrane, a town notable for its alpine-style architecture and often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco.” Continue through cedar forests, which are home to Barbary macaques, to Midelt, situated on a high plain between the Middle and High Atlas mountains. This area is known for its dramatic landscapes and is an ideal spot for appreciating the stark beauty of the mountains.

Day 3: Midelt to Merzouga – Approaching the Desert

From Midelt, descend into the Ziz Valley, a breathtaking vision of deep gorges and palm-filled oases. As you journey towards Erfoud, known for its fossil-filled marbles, the landscape becomes more arid, signaling your approach to the Saharan fringe. Arrive in Merzouga, a small village that serves as the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes. These iconic dunes are the tallest in Morocco and offer an unforgettable sight, especially at sunset. Spend the night in a desert camp and enjoy traditional Berber hospitality.

Day 4: Exploring the Sahara

Dedicate this day to exploring the Sahara Desert. Start with an early morning camel ride to witness the sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, you might visit the nomadic families who call this harsh but beautiful landscape home. Explore the nearby village of Khamlia, famous for its Gnawa music, or venture to the Rissani market, a traditional trading post. As the sun sets, take another camel ride or simply relax and watch the changing colors of the desert.

Day 5: Merzouga to Fes – The Journey Back

After a final desert sunrise, begin the journey back to Fes. This long drive is an opportunity to reflect on the experiences of the past few days, from the bustling medina of Fes to the silent majesty of the Sahara. The trip back is also a chance to see anything you might have missed on the outward journey, including the picturesque Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas mountains. Once back in Fes, spend the evening unwinding and perhaps exploring more of this ancient city.

This 5-day journey from Fes to the Sahara Desert offers an in-depth exploration of Morocco’s cultural heritage and natural wonders. It’s a trip that promises to enchant and inspire with memories of vibrant markets, ancient cities, and the tranquil beauty of the desert.
