Embark on a 4-day journey from the ancient city of Fes to the stunning dunes of Merzouga. This trip offers a deep dive into Morocco’s rich history, diverse cultures, and breathtaking landscapes. Each day brings a new adventure, from exploring medieval medinas to riding camels into the sunset. Here’s how you can immerse yourself in the wonders of Morocco over four unforgettable days.

Day 1: Fes – The Medieval Marvel

Begin your journey in Fes, a city that feels suspended in time. The old medina, Fes el Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s largest urban pedestrian zones. Explore the winding streets, where goods are transported by donkeys and carts. Visit the famous tanneries, where leather is dyed in colorful vats. Don’t miss the Medersa Bou Inania, an intricately decorated theological college. Spend your evening enjoying Moroccan cuisine at a traditional riad.

Day 2: Fes to Midelt – Through the Atlas Mountains

Depart from Fes and head towards the Middle Atlas Mountains. Your journey takes you through a changing landscape of cedar woods, mountain streams, and Berber villages. Stop at Ifrane, known as “Morocco’s Switzerland” for its alpine architecture and ski resorts. Continue through the lush Ziz Valley, filled with date palms and fortified villages. Your day ends in Midelt, a town between the Middle and High Atlas ranges, where you can enjoy the serene mountain atmosphere.

Day 3: Midelt to Merzouga – Gateway to the Dunes

Travel from Midelt towards the Sahara Desert. The landscape shifts dramatically as you approach Merzouga, a small village on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. These dunes are an awe-inspiring sight, rising up to 150 meters in height and stretching as far as the eye can see. In the late afternoon, embark on a camel trek into the heart of the desert. Watch the sunset from atop a dune, then spend the night in a Berber tent under the stars, enjoying local music and food.

Day 4: Merzouga and Surroundings – Desert Life

Wake early to catch the sunrise over the dunes, an unforgettable moment of peace and beauty. After breakfast, explore the area around Merzouga. Visit Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa music, a hypnotic and rhythmic form of music brought to Morocco by West African slaves. Explore the Rissani market, where traders sell spices, vegetables, and crafts. You might also visit the fossil quarries, where ancient treasures are still being uncovered. As the day winds down, take one last look at the vast Sahara around you, a timeless landscape that has captivated travelers for centuries.

This 4-day journey from Fes to Merzouga offers a taste of everything that makes Morocco special, from its ancient cities and cultural treasures to the stark beauty of the Sahara Desert. It’s a journey that will leave you with memories of vibrant colors, spicy aromas, and the serene silence of the desert night.
