Day 1: Fes – The Ancient Labyrinth
Begin your adventure in Fes, the spiritual and cultural heartbeat of Morocco. Explore the ancient medina, Fes el Bali, with its winding alleyways, vibrant souks, and historical marvels like the Al-Qarawiyyin University and the Bou Inania Madrasa. Wander through the tanneries and partake in the rich culinary heritage of the city. Overnight in Fes to soak up the atmosphere of this ancient city.
Day 2: Fes to Midelt – Through the Middle Atlas
Depart Fes and ascend into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Pass through Ifrane, a clean and well-maintained town known as the “Switzerland of Morocco,” and Azrou, an important market center for the region’s Berber tribes. The journey takes you through beautiful forests, jagged rock faces, and Berber villages before descending to the lovely city of Midelt, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 3: Midelt to Merzouga – Doorway to the Desert
Travel from Midelt to Merzouga. This journey takes you through the dramatic Ziz Valley, known for its palm trees and length, and the Tafilalt oasis. As you near Merzouga, the landscape shifts, giving way to the stunning Erg Chebbi dunes. The afternoon is perfect for a camel trek to witness the sunset over the dunes before retiring to a desert camp for a night under the stars.
Day 4: Exploring Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi Dunes
Dedicate this day to exploring the enchanting desert landscape. Wake early to catch the sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, consider a visit to the village of Khamlia to enjoy Gnawa music, a tour of the fossil beds, or an excursion to see the nomadic families. Spend another magical night in the desert, enjoying Berber hospitality.
Day 5: Merzouga to Dades Valley – Valleys and Gorges
After one last desert sunrise, set off towards the Dades Valley. Along the way, stop at Rissani and Erfoud to explore the local market and fossil crafts. Continue through the Todra Gorge, a towering canyon, before arriving in the Dades Valley. The valley, known for its stunning scenery and Berber villages, is an ideal place for an overnight stay.
Day 6: Dades Valley to Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou
Journey from the Dades Valley through the Valley of Roses to Ouarzazate, a city famous for its film studios. Visit the Taourirt Kasbah and, if interested, the Atlas Studios. Drive to the fortified village of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has featured in many films. Explore the ancient dwellings and enjoy the panoramic views.
Day 7: Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech – The Red City
On your final day, travel from Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Arriving in Marrakech, immerse yourself in the vibrant chaos of the city. Visit the Koutoubia Mosque, explore the Saadian Tombs, and lose yourself in the alleys of the souk. As evening falls, head to Jemaa el-Fnaa, a bustling square filled with performers, food stalls, and storytellers.
