- Itinerary
Day 1: Errachidia to Merzouga – The Desert Beckons
Begin your adventure in Errachidia, known for its palm groves and as a gateway to the Sahara. Head towards Merzouga, a small village near the stunning Erg Chebbi dunes, some of the largest in Morocco.
Upon arrival in Merzouga, embark on a camel trek to explore the expansive dunes. Witness the magnificent sunset over the Sahara, with the dunes casting shadows and changing colors. Spend the night in a desert camp under the stars, enjoying traditional Berber hospitality and perhaps some local music.
Day 2: Explore Merzouga and Surroundings
Awake to a beautiful desert sunrise. After breakfast, explore the area around Merzouga. Options include visiting the village of Khamlia to experience Gnawa music, known for its African rhythms, or taking a 4×4 excursion to explore the desert further. Visit local nomadic families to learn about their lifestyle in this harsh but beautiful environment.
In the afternoon, begin your journey towards the Dades Valley, a region known for its striking rock formations and traditional kasbahs. Spend the night in this picturesque valley, surrounded by natural beauty.
Day 3: Dades Valley to Ouarzazate – Gateway to the Desert
After enjoying the Dades Valley, travel to Ouarzazate, often referred to as the gateway to the Sahara. This city is famous for its film studios, where many well-known movies and TV series have been shot. Visit the Taourirt Kasbah and, if time permits, the Atlas Film Studios.
Continue towards Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fortified village is a stunning example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture and has been the backdrop for numerous films. Explore the ancient kasbahs and enjoy the panoramic views.
Day 4: Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech – The Red City
On the final day, travel from Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass. This scenic drive offers breathtaking views and a chance to experience the beauty of the Atlas Mountains.
Arrive in Marrakech, known as the “Red City” for its distinctive clay architecture. Explore the vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa square, bustling with storytellers, musicians, and food vendors. Visit the Koutoubia Mosque, the Saadian Tombs, and the Bahia Palace. Wander through the souks, where you can shop for traditional crafts, spices, and textiles.
